Shongololo Press Release, 04 March 2005
Over the past 10 years Shongololo Express has become the premier rail tour operator in southern Africa. The name, Shongololo, is the Zulu word for millipede and is the name given to the first trains in Africa by the indigenous people of the south as they watched the lines of carriages passing on distant horizons.
Since its establishment in 1995, Shongololo Express has operated 16-day train Adventures to the corners of the southern continent: The Good Hope, between Johannesburg and Cape Town, takes in virtually all the sights internationally regarded as “must-sees” in South Africa; the Southern Cross, between Johannesburg and Victoria Falls, traverses six countries – South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe; and, the Dune, between Windhoek and Cape Town, travels throughout Namibia and South Africa’s Western Cape Province to explores the amazing landscapes, people and fauna of the great Namib desert and the south Atlantic seaboard.
The company also operates a tour to the Western Cape in August taking guests to view the magnificent annual explosion of wild Namaqualand flowers in the Western Capeas well as a popular weekend escape to Maputo, the tropical coastal capital of Mozambique.
Corporate Charters for special interest groups, conferences and sporting events are also to be found in the Shongololo travel bag. Various destinations and many activities are available. The company’s travel-by-night strategy, common to all its tours, leaves the daylight hours in which to explore, hold meetings or take part in whatever activities have been chosen for staff, clients, guests or group.
Shongololo’s experienced and knowledgeable multi-lingual guides and customised air-conditioned Mercedes vehicles are carried on board the train, a feature unique to this operator. They are always at the ready to take guests to see and experience whatever is unusual, beautiful or historic in the locality and no time is wasted in transferring from rail to road.
Without doubt, a train safari is one of the most convenient ways of seeing southern Africa. Unpack upon boarding and only pack again at the end of your tour. Good food, good service, and good fellowship are all part of your traveling ‘hotel’. You can be assured of the same excellent service and great atmosphere on every Shongololo journey.
